Wow! I cant believe I am already thinking about 2012? Luckily I have some beautiful calendar eye candy to help me cope with the reality of all that next year holds. It is no secret... I love a good eBay auction, who doesn't I guess? my latest little winner was this set of sturdy vintage kids chairs. The seller was an absolute pleasure and threw in this cute little table as well as a very funky random ice bucket. His place was jam packed with sooo many lovely retro and vintage items I had a field day browsing through his shed. I really felt like I was part of the American picker team, minus the extensive pricing knowledge of course... The sellers house was also completely amazing, it looked like it was straight out of a magazine shoot themed around vintage. Little girlie can't sit on these chairs yet which thankfully gives me enough time to give them a tiny bit of a make over...hmmm I am off to get my sanding block.

So it has been a few months of solid neglect here on my blog but I am ready to turn things around and change it up a little… what have I been up to? First and foremost being a mum! A super time consuming full time job (24/7) which has been made enjoyable and somewhat easy by a certain lovely little angel of a girl. Second an apprentice housewife, I have spent much time picking tissues out of the laundry, cleaning and re cleaning my house, pureeing what feels like an entire fruit & veg shop, obsessing over which vase should go where and learning to mop floors correctly…yes people that’s right no domestic goddess here and lastly comes a little thing called champ + rosie which was number one not so long ago. I’m sure you can forgive me for the neglect given my new busy little family life. But I am planning to start over again on the champ + rosie front, I have strapped myself back into the design chair and the ideas are once again flowing, for now though I think I would just like to be able to blog again… so, stay with me and watch this space!

All little girls need a great dolls house, dont they... or should that be all "mums" want to relive their childhood through their little girls dolls house! I think its the latter in my case, I cant wait to get cracking on this little project. Should be finished by the time little miss is actually mobile and big enough to know not to eat the furniture or the dolls. My favourite dolls house is still this beautiful creation by Dinosaur Designs which was auctioned to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation of NSW back in 2001.

Everyone has a shed, right? when you clean out that shed you usually find treasures... here are some 1930s treasures belonging to my Nan found in my parents shed. A nursing dictionary, midwifery book and a friendship journal containing a lovely note from my Grandpa (who I never got to meet) from 1934 along with some pretty fun drawings and other notes from friends! I love old things and the memories they make.

Finally I can walk into Spotlight and not feel like a sewing impostor! Here are some of my efforts for the the past few weeks (dont look too closely!) Sewing is great, I'm not really sure why I didnt learn earlier? It doesnt seem like a lot but my fold over pouch, drawstring bag and retro cup pincushion seem like gold to me! If you want to learn definitely check out miss mary sewing classes, kelly is a fab teacher and soooo patient with the unskilled like me!! Next projects... peasant top, pinafore & softies ohh and possibly some Christmas stuff... excited.

Seems (*sewing reference haha) like I have been blabbering on about learning to sew for years now! well finally I am learning, I have signed up with Miss Mary Sewing Classes, soooo exciting I will be sure to take pics of my progress for this week... I think it took me about 50 hours to select fabric for my first project, I am pretty sure the ladies at spotlight had a good laugh, oh well! here are some pics of the sewing machine I have on loan, not sure how old it is but I suspect minimum 40yrs? its fantastic, I love the fact that it has an 'expand-a-matic' however it is a workout carrying it anywhere!

it is no secret that I love a good tote bag! my love of the tote was what pushed me to start creating my own, something lovely to carry all of my junk around in and a pretty alternative for grocery shopping, instead of those green bags... and now my totes are in this great book, hooray super exciting! there are soooo many great makers, illustrators and designers featured in this book and it feels very weird to be including along side them! also I cant wait to use the Gemma Correll tote that comes with it yay!! It was put together by Jitesh Patel (a very talented UK designer) and published by Laurence King check it out!

I wish I had one to pop on display at home! they certainly dont design them like they used too, but luckily you can reminisce with these champ + rosie magnets, maybe you could use them to prop up pics on your fridge!!

Today I ventured out by myself (without little miss!) for a spot of shopping/browsing nothing fancy, I found a store called typo, its probably been around for ages but today was the first time I saw it, my heart kind of sunk, I'm not sure if I like it? sure the stationery and nic nacs are lovely but its sort of like seeing the best of etsy or a local market day tweaked and turned into a mass produced commercial shop if that makes sense? there is plenty of typographical things, babushkas, vintage camera designs, eiffel tour stuff and keep calm merchandise... again I'm not sure who designs their products and what not, but I did feel sorry for the independents out there (like me!) who mostly hand make stuff... I know that I would definitely love it, if I knew that all the stationery came from independent labels and designers but with such cheap pricing I dont think it does? did I mention that it was packed out with shoppers...

Yesterday Little Miss, Alex and I went down to Perth Upmarket for a wander, it was fantastic being on the shopper end for once and having so much time to browse the stalls rather than the usual routine of stuffing my face with food and trying to have a peek around on my five minute break from my stall!

There were a few newbies which was lovely and some old faithful which was also great! here is what I came home with; a couple of pretty little headbands from sweet poppie lane, a lovely, lovely owl and a beautiful organic onesie from future shelter! nothing for me I know, it seems when you have kids you just cant resist stuff like this! Although I did sample some sweet treats and was allowed to window shop down stirling hwy on the way home...

I just love this little owl, so cute!

I am still in shock after seeing what has/is happening in Japan, it just seems so crazy and so sad. My heart goes out to the Japanese people, there are many ways I guess we can all help... and here is one from talented ex Perth designer Skye Ogden who has lived and worked in Japan for the past 5 years, he has created this illustration It says 'NIHON, GANBARE!' or 'YOU CAN DO IT JAPAN!' or as put by his friend of 'STAY STRONG JAPAN!' which is available as a t-shirt 100% of the proceeds will be donated. back in the swing of things...almost?

Parenthood is quite the ride! its full of joy, tears, smiles, feeds, nappies, cuddles and lack of sleep, but i wouldnt have it any other way. Our beautiful little miss made her way into the world 4 days late (by this point i was ready to burst!) all happy, healthy and wide eyed! Being a mum is lovely (so far...) and i cant believe i have been one for just over a month already?

Not a lot of champ and rosie action happening at the moment, I only opened up my sketch book late last week and i have just rediscovered my computer, but slowly and surely the ideas will start flowing again!

I am looking forward to attending perth upmarket as shopper this time around (20th march) and having a good hunt around, they have rebranded and relaunched their website, which is great! a whole bunch more features and cool stuff to look through. I am sure i will come home with a swag full of goodies and i just cant wait to try some of the yummy macaroons i had my eye at the last market...mmm...yum!

Ink & Spindle
A boutique textile studio located in Kensington, Melbourne. Owned by designers Lara Cameron & Tegan Rose, who design and screen print all their textiles by hand in an ethical and sustainable manner.

Abble & Game
Melbourne based duo of Anna & Gareth who create offbeat greeting cards that use humour and real sentiment to convey messages that are quirky, poignant and personal! You just cant help but have a bit of a giggle...

Future Shelter
Another fantastic duo of Jane & Adam who design, print and make a range of awesome goodies from their workshop in North Perth, they are also very big on preserving the environment and sustainability.

Tabitha Emma
Super talented Tabitha Emma is a Sydney based designer and illustrator, who produces a variety of beautiful design and illustration work.

Lately I have been missing a few of the little yummy snacks which I would treat myself to whilst working in Subi (probably a good thing because they are quite fatty!) number one would be the hot chocolate from Boucla delicious, I have tried Dome which is 5 mins away from home but... its just not the same. Also missing the yummy muffins from Ogilvies and the divine Banana bread from spring...so anyway today I thought I would start to try and recreate my favourite little treats, banana bread results are below (note champ + rosie tea towel in the background) the recipe is really simple from here and if I can say so it is super yummy!! watch out spring...next on the list is orange & dark chocolate muffins!

Stationery Hoarding..

I love stationery! I was quite the hoarder in my younger days, I can remember having sheets and sheets of stickers all in pristine condition, I never used any of them I just loved having them to admire... a zillion cute mini erasers in the shape of fruit and cute little animals, I am pretty sure that I never used any of these either, again just purchased to admire their sweetness! I was even excited to go and pick out all of my new school stationery for the year, labeling pencils and contacting books don't get me started!! Well if you are anything like me you will appreciate this place cute tape found via poppytalk heaps of cute stationery in one spot (images from here)

It has taken a while, but...the nursery is complete! I think I stuck to my inspiration board and colour theme well.

One thing I guess to remember for any future decorating ideas I might dream up would be... do not under estimate the wall sticker, this was a mammoth task and probably the most time consuming part of the whole room, but I love the result! the stickers arrived in sheets and had to be cut into a million pieces then labelled...every branch, trunk, leaf and bird was meticulously blutacked on and then peeled off and adhered to the wall by my super patient husband (had it been up to me...I am certain it wouldn't look like this!)

As mentioned I did splurge on a couple of things including the pretty sparrow linen & matching tidy box (not pictured) by Dwell studio ( I could only find one store in Perth who stocked this) and a lovely little eames rocker from a replica store over east

The shelf and frames are from trusty ikea, and I managed to buy the cot and change table second hand. They were both in fantastic condition pretty much as new and were a total bargain... thank you super nice western suburbs lady (I wanted to buy this lady's house whilst I was picking up the furniture it was amazing!) Most of the other bits and pieces are from around town and the net, including pikelet workshop, henry hiccups and speckled egg and of course I made the mobile and garland and designed the wall art!

Overall this was a fun project and I am pretty happy with how its all turned out, I hope the new arrival will love it too!

ps. I wanted to take a pic of the whole room, but my crappy photography skills wouldn't let me.. so maybe in the future.

Nursery Ideas

I thought I would share my little inspiration board that I made for the nursery, the real thing is almost finished (just a few things to hang on the walls!) so pics wont be too far away. I didnt want to go crazy with pink in this room, maybe a little selfish but we still need to use it afterwards so I opted for light grey, white and 'splashes' of pink plus other girly colours as highlights. I got alot of inspiration from ohdeedoh and project nursery, some of the nurseries are quite over the top and crazy, I would think mine is a little more minimal...

I managed to get a few things second hand which was lovely, so I was able to splurge on some super nice linen for the cot and a fab Eames rocker for me! Mentioning the word 'baby' is much like saying the word 'wedding' prices seem to inflate by a billion percent!

Season for sweet treats

One of my earliest Christmas memories would have to be hanging around my Nan's kitchen whilst she baked, whipped, moulded, cut, creamed and made sweet treats that smelt so yummy i wanted to lick every spoon and bowl in the kitchen! (this could be where my food love started?)
This year i thought i would get into the 'mum baking' mode seeing as though i need to work on my skills for next year, and i must say that i was kind of pleased and surprised! i didnt attempt my Nan's Christmas cake recipe it seems quite above my skill level for now, but i did find one from here. I also made a batch of rocky road the recipe was given to me from a friend at work, the best rocky road i have ever had and everyone at work drools over it too... although its probably the ugliest sweet treat in the world, who cares though when it is oh so yummy!

Well.. it is almost Christmas, yay! not so yay for the hot 38degree day. This year there will be no Christmas ham or seafood for me but hey I am sure I can make up for it with plenty of chocolate and other goodies instead!
2010 has been a great year for champ + Rosie, and next year will bring a new little arrival to the team! I have plenty of pics to post about transforming our study into a happy little nursery, and yes I did treat myself to another very special chair!

Thanks to everyone who came down to perth upmarket last sunday it was a fab day! although I was only there for a few hours... my husband & brother did a great job looking after the stall... yes they did get some strange looks and a little bit of 'sooo you two guys craft this stuff huh?...' which they brushed off!

I did manage to have a bit of a look around this time and it was fantastic to see so many creatives in the one place.

If you are in Perth, dont forget that Subi Upmarket kicks off tonight at 5pm on Rokeby rd (towards the Hay st end) we wont be there this time (hopefully the drunken family member of the stall holder near us from last year wont be there either... no names) its a great night with loads of entertainment, yummy food and great stalls!

hooray! my second lot of fabric samples arrived today these designs are inspired by the sunshine we have been seeing around Perth lately, I am pretty happy with them although the colours might need a little adjusting... I was hoping to have these available in fat quarters this year but I am quite pushed for time at the moment, so this looks more like a project for the new year! But this week should see this range of designs grow to become canvas art, tea towels and bags fingers crossed!!

A little while ago I mentioned that I moved house, it was weird going from a brand new house into an 80s exposed brick number! but we are slowly starting to redo bits and pieces which is making it more like home, and now that I am in crazy nesting mode I am sure that things will get done quicker. This is a peak at the dining room, the before is from the previous owners (I kept all of the the old real estate pics for comparison!) I gave into temptation for my replica chairs obsession earlier in the year and when I found them on sale on the net I just couldn't resist! its getting there, and I have finally started to make a few prints from my euro travels from about three years ago... glad to see my hundreds of photos haven't gone to waste just yet.

I cant believe how fast this year has gone...christmas is just around the corner, I guess you know your getting older when you say things like that! champ + rosie will be doing one final market for the year Perth Upmarket 28th November at UWA which will be a biggie... I think I will probably do half a day as I dont know how I will go maneuvering around behind my stall with my ever growing bump! but no doubt there will a couple of cheerful folks to replace me...

I had longed for an ornate style frame for ages... a cool looking white one. Awhile ago I went to an auction for collectables, arts, antiques and general bits and came home with a lovely looking gold/black frame this is how project ornate frame turned out! not too bad, i originally wanted a modern looking pin up board but opted for the hall mirror instead, the mirror was cut and adhered for about $40 and the frame was around $15. Lucky I still have one frame left... that illusive pin up board may not be that far away!

Perth Upmarket was a couple of sundays ago now and it was just wonderful! great customers, super retailers and yummy food! it was a really, really big day and very busy the crowd was amazing... you can check out some pics here i did take my camera but i haven't downloaded my pics yet... i couldn't even really estimate the number of people but it was huge!

i have been reading a few blogs and facebook pages which have sort of bagged the market i guess? only in the way of the huge crowd and not being able see everything and the space not being big enough...but i think when you go to market days and big events you do have to be prepared to give a little, yes there will be crowds, and some pushing and vendors may sell out of things.. i'm not sure what people expect? but i thought it was a great day and i loved getting out from behind my stall and having a wander around with the rest of the crowd! thanks to the perth upmarket team for putting on such a great event in perth!

You may remember from this post that i said i wanted to sew and screenprint this year? well, i had my first attempt at screenprinting this week and yes it was messy! but the results were worth it! here is a peek at some of the little brooches i am working on, a simple one colour print onto some small wooden circles. I am hoping to have these perfected soon and maybe have a few for sale at Perth Upmarket!

... since my last post! well I guess I have some good reason? I have been moving house packing and unpacking cleaning and tidying and I have only just got my internet hooked up again! so from now on you can expect more frequent updates!

Last friday i went to an auction for collectables, arts, antiques and general bits and pieces pretty intense let me tell you! I came home with a couple of lovely gilded frames which I am hoping to turn into some pretty cool pin up boards, I will be sure to post a before and after! I really wanted to buy so many things from the auction but I dont really have space for them so I thought I would just draw them instead.

I think this is the calm before the storm? a fairly relaxing weekend before trying to pack our house into a truck and move..

Today i went down to check out Perth Upmarket at the new UWA venue, it was great! it did feel weird to be a shopper rather than a retailer but it was so nice to have some time to browse. I found parking within a minute of turning into UWA which was fabulous and it cost nothing! (unlike the old city venue) there was also heaps of space for everyone and beautiful lawns to have a sit down and relax on. I limited myself to just a few little things (below), I couldn't resist calling into Sherbet cafe & bake shop on the way home for an afternoon takeaway of cupcakes (chocolate and carrot & lemon).

I was lucky enough to score a few pages out of The West Australian newspaper from March 8, 1950 (thanks to some renovations on a very old house!) I just adore the ads and thought i would share.

I particularly love the Peters tagline 'the health food of the nation' this may explain my icecream addition (30 something years prior to my birth!) and check out the washing machine from Bairds...yikes!

it seems like a while since my last post...i have been super busy... hopefully i can make up for it with the new print pictured below available online now also dont forget to check out the perth upmarket blog, i will be doing another spot of guest blogging in the lead up to the March upmarket, champ + rosie wont be there, but there will be something like over 100 retailers so i think you will enjoy yourself regardless. Its a little sad seeing this will be the first one we will miss, but i think i will be helping out on the day and i am really looking forward to finally getting out and having a look around at the stalls as i dont really ever have much of a chance to browse around buy anything!

It seems I am about 13 days late with the happy new year message…but I will say it anyway happy 2010!

What does this year hold for champ + rosie? Well hopefully some exciting new things, there are many ideas running through my mind about new bits n pieces mainly a few textile/fabric prints, new canvasses and a whole bunch of sewing and screen printing….yes I said “sewing” this is the year which I learn to sew and operate my little machine effectively (rather then cursing at and packing it away into the cupboard!) so, I guess stay tuned for progress and rantings!

PS Its no secret that I totally love food, yes my hips will confirm this. These are some pics from taylors in the swan valley one of my favourite little lunch places to go (they also do any amazing breakfast) it’s a little studio, gallery and café. All beautiful home cooked style fresh produce its the sort of place which has mismatched teacups & saucers and serves oj in metal camping cups, a super relaxing vibe.

When i was younger i didnt really understand the whole op shopping thing, i remember my mum taking me to a couple and thinking these arent the real "shops" where are all the new things? where are the sparkling lights? why isn't everything made from plastic? and where are all the multiple items in 6 different sizes and 50 different colour combinations?

well i think i have certainly moved on since then! (thank goodness...) i love op shops and the treasures you can find in them, i love that you can ponder where the object has come from? who owned it? where did it sit in their house? what was it used for? and its such a brilliant form of recycling and a great way to contribute to charity. People who work for organisations like the salvos, st vinnies, good sammys and more do a fantastic job and a great service to our society. I regularly browse my local for finds and i love dropping in a bunch of my stuff hoping that someone else will find a little treasure for themselves.

just wanted to share my delicious honey! every year around christmas we receive some pots from alex's grandad who keeps bees in south west WA and this year we got the blackbutt honey similar to jarrah but even more delicious... the Blackbutt trees are becoming rare due to logging so i feel very fortunate!

Market season is over for me this year … I love doing markets because I love to see and meet the people who buy my stuff, I like hearing about where they are going to put it up in their house, what outfit it is going to go with and who it will make a perfect gift for! A little self indulgent really?
The last market I did was subi upmarket a part of the subi festival, it was good, my very first night market! the customers were different to the perth upmarket crowd who are passionately there to buy, buy buy and chat of course (which I love)…. There was plenty of browsing and lots of really cool side events and entertainment. Probably the only things I would knock would be the lighting, I think they ran out of time to put up the spot lights, my stall was not too bad but other people were really in darkness which makes it a bit hard for people to view your wares and I guess the price for a hotdog was a little extravagant at $6 a pop I guess this is the price you pay for eating junkfood! But all in all I think market season was great this year, next year perth upmarket is going to move to UWA which I think will be great for the customers because I often hear about how cramped it is and how hard parking was to find, so the new venue will be fab! Thanks for all of your market day support this year its been wonderful….
